Referring to the wider stretch of high-altitude sand dunes around Skardu, the Cold Desert is known locally as one of the more unusual landscapes in the region, an arid, sandy terrain set within a valley otherwise defined by rivers, lakes and glaciated peaks. It sits alongside Katpana as part of the same broader dune system, and both are usually visited together given their close proximity to each other.
