Laid out in the classic Mughal charbagh style, Shalimar Gardens step down across three descending terraces linked by water channels, fountains and marble pavilions. The gardens were designed as a retreat, and that quality survives in how the space is used today: families spread out on the lawns, water still runs through the channels when the fountains are switched on, and the red sandstone pavilions offer shade at the upper level. It's one of the few Mughal gardens in the region that has kept its original terraced layout largely intact.
